The Transplant Nephrologist is a vital member of the Hartford Hospital Kidney Transplant Program (HHKTP) and, as such, assumes an active role in all aspects of the transplant program, including clinical, administrative and marketing processes. This is a full-time salaried hospital position with on-call responsibilities.
Responsibilities
1. Primary responsibility for direct care of renal and pancreas transplant candidates, recipients and living donors. This includes pre-transplant evaluation of candidates/living donors, in-patient care of transplant recipients/living donors and post-transplant management of recipients/living donors (medical issues) in the outpatient clinic.
2. Participates in the selection of suitable candidates for kidney transplantation. This includes participation in the multidisciplinary Transplant Selection Committee Meetings of the Kidney Program and it may include the direct review and examination of patients.
3. Participates in the analysis of clinical outcomes for protocol development and implementation in such areas as immunosuppression and pre-emptive preventive therapies.
4. Participates in all Kidney Transplant Program outreach initiatives, including participation at planning meetings, and education meetings with referring physicians from the New England area.
5. Develops, implements, reviews and revises as necessary patient care policies and procedures in accordance with evidence-based medical practice.
6. Collaborates with practitioners from areas such as Infectious Disease and Hematology in developing policies that relate to the optimal care of patients on the Kidney transplant waitlist, receiving transplant and in post-transplant stages of care.
7. Carefully monitors and reviews data in Scientific Registry of Transplant Results and date collected and promulgated by the United Network for Organ Sharing.
8. Supervises the clinical practices of the Kidney Transplant Coordinators.
9. Works closely with the Director of Histocompatibility Laboratory to advise and review tissue typing policies and the management of therapy as it pertains to elevated PRA, ABO, HLA incompatibilities, and UNOS Listing Strategies.
10. Participates in research activities of the Transplant Program.
11. Participates in daily transplant teaching rounds on the in-patient unit. As Professor at the University Of Connecticut School Of Medicine, will participate at the Hartford Hospital Brownstone Clinic in the care of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. Also, will develop a formal Transplant rotation for the University of Connecticut Nephrology Fellowship program in conjunction with the Director of Nephrology at the University Of Connecticut School of Medicine.
12. Develops and nurtures a therapeutic relationship with patients, family members and loved ones before, during and after organ transplantation. Manifests a commitment to the primacy of patient care and the primacy of the patient's best interests.
13. Works with the Chief of Medicine to assure compliance of transplant nephrologists with the protocols and regulations of the hospital, the medical staff and the Department of Medicine.
14. Demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and cooperation with all health care providers and provider extenders within the Hartford Hospital Kidney Transplant Program.
Requirements
The Associate Director of the HHKTP will be Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology as well as a Certified OPTN/UNOS Transplant Physician and member of the American Society of Transplantation, and Nephrology. The Associate Director will work with and report to the Transplant Program Director. Must have significant experience in Transplant Nephrology.
