POSITION SUMMARY
The Family Medicine Resident Physician position entails the provision of patient care that matches the individual physician's level of training and competence. A Resident Physician's responsibilities include patient care activities and educational activities within the scope of their clinical privileges and commensurate with their level of training. Expectations include attendance at clinical rounds and didactics, timely completion of medical records, compliance with all educational and record keeping responsibilities, demonstration of proficiency in the core competencies and specialty milestones, and adherence to professionalism standards and ethical principles.
All Resident Physicians in the Family Medicine Residency Program are employees of MHC Healthcare and must abide by its corporate and institutional (GME) policies and procedures.
Residents are taught and evaluated according to the 6 core competencies established by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME): Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Professionalism, Practice Based Learning, Systems-Based Practice, and Interpersonal Communication. Residents are also evaluated bi-annually on the 19 specialty specific milestones for Family Medicine according to ACGME standards and as indicated in Institutional Resident Renewal and Promotion policy.
As part of the professionalism competency, residents are expected to complete evaluations for each rotation for which they participate; including evaluations of faculty, peers, and of the program.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation : An applicant must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for appointment to the ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency Program:
- Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or
- Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
- Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada and meets one of the following additional qualifications
- Holds a current and valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment; or
- Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in their current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program.
- Must have passed United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 before rank order list submission OR have passed Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensure Examination (COMLEX) Step 1 and Step 2 before order rank list submission.
Must provide three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, a and a personal statement, and must submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to be included in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Must be in possession of a current AZ training or unrestricted license, a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number, and current lifesaving certificate plus other advanced competencies as deemed necessary for their level of training and specialty, such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO) to become involved in direct patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPost Graduate Year 1 Resident (PGY-1):
Provides responsible, safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.
Progressively acquires clinical skills consistent with the practice of Family Medicine.
Practices at a level commensurate with experience and skills.
Participates fully in assigned educational activities, including conferences, rotations, workshops, simulations, and journal clubs.
Provides patient care under the supervision of a member of the Family Medicine faculty or other supervising licensed independent practitioner, as assigned by the Residency Program Director.
Demonstrates respect, dignity, and compassion in all activities and interactions to internal and external customers.
Recognizes own role as a learner and participates in available opportunities to enhance learning.
Ensures timely attendance and deadline management for all clinical and educational activities.
Accepts feedback and identifies opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Practices cost effective, high-quality, patient care.
Logs required procedures and duty hours and completes evaluations in a timely manner as outlined in institutional policies.
Completes timely and comprehensive medical records for all patients.
Adheres to institutional security requirements including wearing an identification badge while on duty and safeguarding patient and institutional privacy.
Demonstrates the highest levels of professionalism in the work environment and when representing MHC Healthcare at other institutions.
In addition to the essential functions outlined above, PGY-1 Residents will be responsible for the following:
Under direction of the Attending or Senior Resident, sees a broad spectrum of patients with an emphasis on quality of patient evaluation and care.
Performs the initial patient assessment and actively participates in all aspects of patient care, including history and physical, diagnostic and therapeutic planning, procedures, writing orders, and interactions with families.
Conducts an in-depth discussion of all cases with the attending prior to all diagnostic studies or therapeutic interventions.
PGY1 residents cannot supervise other residents or medical students.
All procedures must be done under direct approval and supervision of an attending.
