Neurosurgeon Jobs in Massachusetts
A Neurosurgeon is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. They perform surgeries to remove tumors, treat brain injuries, relieve nerve pain, and address neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. Given the critical nature of their work, Neurosurgeons need excellent manual dexterity, high levels of focus, and the ability to make decisions under pressure. They should also have strong communication skills to explain complex medical information to patients and their families.
Before becoming a Neurosurgeon, they must complete an undergraduate degree, followed by four years of medical school to earn an M.D. or D.O. degree. Once they have completed medical school, aspiring Neurosurgeons must then complete a six to seven-year residency in neurosurgery. Following their residency, they may also choose to complete a fellowship for specialized training in areas such as pediatric neurosurgery or neurosurgical oncology. After all of their training, they must become board certified by passing an exam from the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Prior to becoming a Neurosurgeon, a person may work as a medical intern, medical resident in a related field such as general surgery, or a neurosurgery resident.
