To become a Pulmonologist, they should have completed a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) and a residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary Disease. Board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease is often required. Prior roles that a person may hold before becoming a Pulmonologist include Internal Medicine Physician, Resident in Pulmonology, or a Fellow in Pulmonary Disease.
